I have an external hard drive enclosure which houses an old 20gig hd of mine. I only use it ocassionally to transfer files from one pc to another.
I tried connecting it to my pc the other day but it did not recognize it. The pc did make that disconnecting noise when i disconnected it from the usb... I tried with my laptop and i get the same thing.
I have checked for hardware changes on both computers but i still get no results. I also checked the wiring on the external enclosure and everything seems fine... What could be wrong with this?

well if it doesn't get recognized by 2 computers, that just means its broken, if it detects that its connecting but then disconnects then its broken, OR the usb cord is defective.

I think there is no problem with your PC and laptop configuration, as long as you did not do any changes lately.
Check the power of your external HD housing, if there is power then check if your old HDD starts, you can hear some noise inside the HDD if it really starts.
It is not worth fixing.
A new 500 GB external drive with warranty is $120 ; this makes 20GB of the 500GB drive worth about $4.80
